Middle School Language Arts

 About the Teacher
​
Mrs. Jones graduated from Creighton University (Omaha, NE) in 2015 with a double major in English and Secondary Education. In the spring of 2022, Mrs. Jones will graduate with a Masters in Educational Leadership through Marian University (Indianapolis, IN) and a Building Level Administrator license. Mrs. Jones and her husband have a son who was born in November of 2020 and a four-year-old pet dog.

The 2021-2022 school year will be her seventh year teaching at St. Mark Catholic School as the middle school language arts teacher and sixth grade homeroom teacher. She is thrilled to start another year of teaching, learning, and growing in faith with her students.

​Below is a listing of the topics and units that will be covered in Mrs. Jones's middle school Language Arts class at St. Mark Catholic School.

6th Language Arts



  • Novels: Restart by Gordon Korman & Holes by Louis Sachar
  • Fiction reading & writing skills with various short stories & poems (summarizing, theme with supporting evidence, predicting, making inferences, etc.)
  • Nonfiction reading & writing skills with various passages & texts (main idea & supporting details, author's purpose, text structure, tone, mood, etc.) 
  • Writing: argumentative, narrative, & informative (6 traits of writing)
  • Grammar & vocabulary: weekly practice with IXL's online program

7th Language Arts

  • Novels: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton & a second dystopian novel (The Giver by Lois Lowry or Among the Hidden ​by Margaret Peterson Haddix)
  • Fiction reading & writing skills from 6th grade will continue to be built and strengthened with new, grade-level short stories & poems (including a dystopian literature unit prior to reading The Giver) 
  • Nonfiction reading & writing skills from 6th grade will continue to be built and strengthened with new, grade-level passages & texts
  • Writing: argumentative, narrative, & informative (6 traits of writing)
  • Grammar & vocabulary: weekly practice with IXL's online program

8th Language Arts

  • HSPT bell ringer prep throughout first quarter
  • Review of nonfiction & fiction reading skills with a short story & nonfiction passage unit
  • Review of 6 traits of writing topics with multiple writing assignments
  • Edgar Allan Poe Unit
  • Argumentative Essay Unit -- structure of essay, parenthetical & in-text citations, creating a claim and supporting with evidence, explanations, counterarguments, & rebuttals
  • Introduction to Shakespeare: "Romeo & Juliet" -- Shakespearean language, historical context, play directions, conflicts & themes, etc. 
  • "Flowers for Algernon" Short Story Unit
  • Poetry Analysis Unit
  • Grammar & vocabulary: weekly practice with IXL's online program
