Below is a listing of the topics and lessons St. Mark students will cover in Mrs. Valdois-Bruner's music classes at St. Mark Catholic School

Music K-1



  • Students will learn to keep a steady beat and perform rhythm accompaniments to songs.
  • Students will learn proper singing and performance techniques. Students will  demonstrate their understanding through their performance in the Christmas program.​
  • ​​Students will learn to identify and perform basic music notation, to recognize different types of musical instruments, to move expressively to music, how music relates to the other arts and academic subjects, and how music is a part of daily life.

Music 2-3

  • Students will continue to develop their ability to identify and perform more complex rhythmic accompaniments in a variety of meters and tempos.
  • ​​​Students will continue to develop their singing and performance skills.  They will demonstrate their skills in their performance in the Christmas musical.
  • Students will play musical games and learn folk dances from a variety of cultures​ and time periods.

  • Students will continue to work with more complex musical notation and terminology and be able to use their learning to describe and discuss music.

Music 4-5

  • Students will develop their singing and performance skills and will make up the leading roles in the Christmas musical.​
  • ​​Students will develop their ability to read and decode music notation.  They will develop their abilities by playing the recorder.
  • Students in fifth grade will have the option of participating in the band program.
  • ​​Students will work individually and in groups to compose rhythmic and harmonic accompaniments to songs in class.  Students will also continue their study of American folk music.

Music 6-8

  • Students will develop their ability to read and perform rhythmic and harmonic accompaniments to music.
  • ​​Students will use classroom instruments to create their own music incorporating rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements.​
  • Students will study musical form and style from around the world and through western history.
  • Students will develop their vocal and performance skills.  They will lead music in small groups at the school masses.  They can also sign up for Drama class and perform in the spring musical.
